5 of the Most Anticipated Films of 2023

With a new year encroaching, talk of the most anticipated films of 2023 is beginning to flood the media. One reason some films are talked about more than others? Good Public Relations.

After looking through different media platforms, I can see which films get the most attention. In this post, I will introduce 5 of those films to you.

  1. Wonka

The new Wonka movie is a prequel to Willy Wonka with Timothée Chalamet as the star. Chalamet will play young Willy Wonka as he navigates his earliest endeavors with chocolate and Oompa Loompas. While we do not know their specific roles, other notable names featured in Wonka are Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins and Olivia Colman. The current release date of Wonka is over a year away, set to be December 15, 2023.

  1. Asteroid City

If you know big names in film, you know Wes Anderson. And if you know Wes Anderson, you probably are looking forward to his newest film, Asteroid City. Per usual, Anderson has casted familiar favorites as the stars, including Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell and Maya Hawke. Originally, Asteroid City’s said release date was 2022, but with less than two months remaining and no set date within these next two months, it is looking more and more likely that we will not be watching Asteroid City until 2023.

  1. Barbie

2023 is a big year for Margot Robbie, as she also is set to star in Greta Gerwig’s newest live-action film, Barbie. Gerwig herself wrote the film, with Noah Baumbach as well. Ryan Gosling is playing Ken in this childhood favorite-turned-film. And to pile onto these names, the cast list also includes comedian actors Will Ferrell and Michael Cera, Emma Mackey from the Netflix hit series Sex Education and more. If you are reading this and feel surprised to see people like Baumbach and Gerwig writing Barbie, you can see how they took on the project in theaters on July 21, 2023. Smasher provided us with a small first look linked below:

  1. The Super Mario Bros Movie

All the Mario fans out there will be happy to know that in the new year, on April 7, The Super Mario Bros Movie is getting released. Directed by Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros Movie is Jelenics debut film, with Aaron Horvath as co-director, who has only directed one other film back in 2018. The cast list has a bit more of a familiar feel, with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and others, as the voices of the Mario character in this animated film. If you are excited about this, I have good news for you! The official trailer has been released, and I’ve included it right here for easy viewing.

  1. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

The Hunger Games trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins, was a hit series novel that later became a beloved movie trilogy. In 2020, Collins released the prequel book of the series, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” On November 17, 2023, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes will get released in film format. The cast list of this one is keeping us on our toes with some familiar and some not-so-familiar names. Watch Lionsgate Movies’ reveal of this film here:

Hundreds of movies are released every year. But typically, we only hear about a fraction of these movies as they come out and an ever fewer amount before the release. These five movies are already being discussed and drawing attention in the media, which tells me they are doing something right. Whether or not they will do well at the box office is something I can’t tell you, because we won’t know until the numbers tell us after their release. What we can do is continue to see how they are promoted up until that point and hopefully continue to get excited about their debut.

Which are you most excited to see?
